Sunflowers are the least formal thing we sell and one of the most reliably welcome. They read as cheerful rather than romantic, they are large enough to look generous without being expensive, and they survive a delivery to a desk or a hospital room better than most flowers.

Looking after sunflowers

They drink heavily. Top the vase up every day, trim two centimetres off the stems every few days, and keep them out of the afternoon sun. Expect six to ten days.
